Acetylene black is a type of carbon black that is used as an anode material in the production of manganese dry batteries. It is obtained from the decomposition of acetylene gas, which is derived from either calcium carbide or naphtha. The purity of the acetylene used is crucial, as it needs to be over 99%. Once the acetylene is introduced into the reactor, the temperature is raised to 800℃ to initiate the exothermic reaction. To maintain a stable mass, the temperature is then kept at around 1800℃, which can be controlled by the water cooling jacket of the reactor's outer cylinder.
One of the reasons that acetylene black is preferred over furnace carbon black for this application is that its crystallization and secondary structure are more developed, resulting in better electrical conductivity and liquid absorption. Moreover, the absence of heavy metal impurities in acetylene black means that the self-discharge loss in the batteries is lower and the storage performance is better.
Considering the continued demand for dry batteries, it is expected that acetylene black will remain the dominant material used as the anode in their production in the future.
